Peralta Peak is a high point of the Peralta Hills formation that splits the Anaheim Hills area with Santiago Oaks area, making this hike fairly well accessible, though those who visit it will most likely find themselves enjoying the views without another hiker in sight.
While the peak can be accessed by trails from several directions, the hike from Serrano Park is the shortest and quickest route to the top. Though that's not to say it is easy. The trail follows a use path, and tends to be overgrown and slick in places.
Beginning at the park, we found it easiest to head off in a clockwise direction on the loop route. An unsigned trail leaves the park at the far end of the concrete walking path and immediately begins a steep climb up the hillside. Views begin to the open up and as the single track reaches the power lines, the route widens and becomes much clearer and easier to follow.
The route to the peak is clear, and a few nicely set boulders at the top offer a perch to dangle your legs over the sheer drop toward the brush below. Panoramic views abound, as it seems the entirety of Orange County from the mountains to the sea and Channel Islands is visible.
Continuing back down toward the park, the most notable thing to keep in mind is the faint path where the route leaves the dirt road and descends down a slick sandstone slope back to the park below.
Serrano Park has parking, bathrooms and drinking water, and is open daily from 7am until sunset. The full loop will take you 1.2 miles, though other trails can be added for those looking to get a little more distance in.
